After facing a crushing seven-wicket defeat by Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar said that his side needs to put on big totals but praised his bowlers and fielders for pushing the till the very end.

Excerpts from his media briefing:

On dropping Sanath Jayasuriya: Well I know it is tough. But sometimes you have to take certain calls. For both me and Shaun, it was not a easy call. We know Sanath and he took it sportingly. It was a tough call for us and Luke was picked ahead of him.

On dropping himself down the order: We were just trying out different combinations. I thought may with two spinners in their side I wanted to be there and that was the idea. I wanted to send Luke Ronchi up the order and figure out how he does. He looked pretty good in a couple of practice games.

On the team’s strategy now: Well I think whatever games are remaining we have to win them all. We have been pushed to the corner and we will have to start to put up some descent totals. Today I think we didn’t scored many runs on the board but the bowling department was very good. So the basic problem is not having enough runs on the board.

On the turning point: It was very much there. I think in the seventh or the eight over when the spinners came on and the ball started gripping a bit. It was clear that the batsmen were not comfortable rotating the strike. The idea was to try and keep the ball as slow as possible. It was gripping a bit and that was the chance because the moment the fast bowlers came they were put away.

On his team’s bowling performance: I don’t think if you score 117 runs and still make a good match out of it and I think we were pretty much there in the match. Our bowling and fielding were disciplined. Sometimes things just don’t click for you.
