Once Sehwag recovered the selectors dropped him. Moreover, Yuvraj, who was injured in South Africa before the Champions Trophy, also recovered and Dravid had no place in the team," he added. .

Gavaskar also lauded Sachin Tendulkar, who would complete 20 years of international cricket next month, for his commitment to the game.

"It is a tremendous achievement to be able to play for 20 years consistently. Even after 20 years he is still child at heart. He has still got the enthusiasm of a child and is still hungry to perform after playing for so many years," he said.

New Zealand fast bowling great Sir Richard Hadlee felt the hallmark of a great player was how he performed abroad and how fast he comes out of a lean patch, and Tendulkar was excellent on both counts.

Chennai Super Kings’ off-spin trio of Muttiah Muralitharan, R Ashwin and Suresh Raina out-thought Kings XI Punjab to win a low-scoring thriller to take the second place behind Delhi Daredevils on the table in the DLF Indian Premier League here on Wednesday. The trio had combined figures of six for 38 in 12 overs as their team successfully defended a total of 116.

The world’s most successful off-break bowler Muralitharan was magnificent as he returned a haul of two for eight in his four overs; the gangling Ashwin picked up two scalps for 13 while while the clever Raina added to the specialists’ efforts with two for 17, including the big wicket of Yuvraj Singh as they throttled Kings XI Punjab’s bid to win and enter the semifinals.

The 24-run defeat has all but sent Kings XI Punjab out of the race for a place in the last four as Deccan Challengers and Royal Challengers Bangalore can both join Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings in the semifinals. Deccan Challengers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who play their last game on Thursday, and Kings XI Punjab have 14 points each but Yuvraj Singh’s team will be hurt by its lower net run rate than either of their rivals.

Some eyebrows were raised when Chennai Super Kings decided to rest Matthew Hayden and Albie Morkel, both nursing niggles. And some more eyebrows were raised as left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati was stood down for Ashwin. But it was clear that Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming wanted to challenge Kings XI Punjab with a diet of off-spin.

Raina and Jacob Oram were the only other batsmen to reach double figures as the Kings XI Punjab fast bowlers claimed five wickets among themselves.

Delhi Daredevils have surprised one and all with their choices in the team XI since day one of DLF Indian Premier League 2009 in South Africa. One of the biggest surprises this year has been the fact that a legend like Glenn McGrath has not featured in any of the games. Also Daniel Vettori has been left out for the balance in some game.

Small wonder Delhi Daredevils coach Greg Shipperd believes he has the dirtiest task to do when he has to go up to the likes of McGrath and break the news to him. "With the four overseas players rule and us needing to beef our batting up with overeas players. There is really often one bowling spot. It is difficult and embarrassing for me to go to Glenn McGrath and say 'Sorry mate we haven't picked you in the team',"said Shipperd in an exclusive interview with iplt20.com.

Without McGrath, Vettori and even skipper Virender Sehwag in a few games, Delhi Daredevils have won games and that is a big achievement. The coach naturally feels happy that his side has managed to overcome these hurdles to top the league.

"This is testament to the group that goes out and the mission that they have. There are a lot of fabulous players sitting on benches, not playing the game. So I still encourage IPL to think their way through opportunities, to if you like broaden the exposure to those international players, without diluting to any significant degree to the absolute aim of promoting and developing the Indian cricketers," Shipperd said.

The Delhi Daredevils coach believes there has to be an additional overseas player allowed in the playing XI just to spice up the competition. He says he has spoken to his fellow Victorian Shane Warne about his idea and the champion leggie has liked the concept.

"There can be an identified block of games across the tournament where you instead of four overseas players, you throw in a fifth as well. Whether it is Vettori or McGrath or a player that the competition wants to see and the player wants to play. That oportunity in three or four games across the tournament can be an avenue to play and show their skills.

It wasn’t one those high-scoring thrillers, synonymous with the DLF Indian Premier League, but Delhi Daredevils slipped past Mumbai Indians with seven wickets in hand at Buffalo Park on Friday. The match extended into the penultimate over as Delhi Daredevils nearly made heavy weather of reaching the 117-run target.

Delhi Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir said that the victory would help the team in keeping the momentum. “We never wanted to lose that momentum. Even a loss can turn things aroundin a tournament like this. At a certain point, run rate did go up but we were never under pressure as we had enough wickets. 116 wasn’t that much and the way we approached the target, it was part of our gameplan,” he said.

It wasn’t a good day for Mumbai Indians who ended up with their lowest total in the tournament. Disappointed with another loss, Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar said that the batsmen could not put enough score on the board for their bowlers to defend. “We needed a win. But with just 116 on board, it was always going to be difficult for us. The bowlers did their job to their best. We have been pushed to the corner but then all is still not over and we will try to bounce back,” he said.

Man-of-the-match Ashish Nehra said that he was happy with his performance as everything was going well for him on the field. “I am bowling quite well with the old ball. But if you take early wickets, it sets things right for you. Today it was difficult to bowl against the wind,” said Nehra, adding that the win was important as now they were on the top of the table.

His team-mate Fervez Mehroof, on the bench for much of the series, said that it was tough fighting for a place in the team as the composition was good. “Though I would have loved to play in the middle, it has been a pleasure to see my team perform so well so far. We have done our homework well,” said the Sri Lankan

Last season Brendon McCullum set the DLF-IPL on fire with his breathtaking hitting in the opening game of the event. That knock enlivened the tournament and sent the popularity skyrocketting. In that one game McCullum hit 158 to become the highest scorer in a T20 game.

Chennai's have banked primarily on Matthew Hayden, the season's highest runscorer with 246, and Suresh Raina, the second highest with 232, for most of their runs. Chennai's bowling isn't the strongest in the tournament but two youngsters - Shadab Jakati and Sudeep Tyagi - played crucial parts in the win against Delhi. Deccan have relied heavily on their openers - Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs - for momentum. Rohit Sharma's performances have tapered after an outstanding half-century against Bangalore but Deccan seem to have found a talent in 25-year old T Suman who has 64 runs from two innings at a strike-rate of 145. RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha are their leading wicket-takers with 12 and 10 respectively while Edwards has been restrictive with the new ball. Edwards, though, has left South Africa to join the West Indian squad in England and Deccan will need to pick a replacement.

Monday's match at Buffalo Park in East London is between teams which had contrasting starts to the second season of the IPL but are now experiencing a change in form.

Last year's finalists Chennai Super Kings had a slow start to the tournament despite their squad brimming with hard-hitting all-round talent. They lost three of their first five games to tough opponents, had one washout against the league's (nearly) also-rans, Kolkata Knight Riders, and lost Andrew Flintoff to injury, leaving them in the bottom half of the points table. However, Chennai regrouped and won their last two matches - against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils - and are back in the reckoning for a semi-final berth.

Chennai's most recent defeat in the IPL came against Deccan Chargers, who had transformed themselves from last season's worst team to this season's best by winning their first four matches with relative ease. Deccan were No. 1 in the league when they ran into Delhi and were defeated for the first time. The more serious setback, though, came against a weaker Rajasthan side, who had to strain every sinew to cause an upset. Both those defeats were results of Deccan losing focus during the final stages of the match: Fidel Edwards lost his temper while bowling to Tillakaratne Dilshan during Delhi's chase, and Deccan's fielding went to pieces in the last couple of overs of Rajasthan's pursuit.

Despite the two defeats, however, Deccan are still on top of the league but another loss against a resurgent Chennai will bring them closer to the rest of the pack.

There was no choice. It was pretty obvious what I had to do. I didn't have to think too much. I just had to bat through and make sure that I batted long enough for the side to get a score.

You can't keep calm. But it's always big blow to lose guys like Karan Goel, Ravi Bopara, Yuvraj Singh and Mahela. They are top players in world cricket. But the way Irfan batted, he was the key that shifted the momentum to our side.

We didn't talk much. The best thing that Irfan came and told me was: 'come on let's go positive'. Keep going well at the ball. Just make sure about whatever we do. I think that worked well for us.

It seemed the IPL had finally found its Twenty20 soul, with two batsmen combining to score - for the first time in this tournament - at a frenetic pace throughout the innings. But chasing a huge Deccan Chargers total, a limp show from Bangalore Royal Challengers meant another wait for the first closely-fought encounter this season.

The day belonged to Adam Gilchrist and Rohit Sharma, who scored 123 between them, off 75 deliveries, with 88 of them coming in boundary hits. The target of 185, under lights at Newlands, is not an experience teams look forward to. It didn't help that for the third time in a row, Bangalore lost a wicket without having scored a run.

The difference in conditions in the two innings showed, with Deccan's bowlers managing to swing the ball in the initial overs. The first ball of the Bangalore innings, bowled by Fidel Edwards, was a fast, swinging yorker that removed Jesse Ryder for a duck in successive IPL matches.

If Edwards made an early impact, with only 31 runs coming in the Powerplay overs, Gilchrist was not far behind in Deccan's batting Powerplay. In the first two overs, bowled by Praveen Kumar and Dale Steyn, Gilchrist's clean hitting necessitated six fielding changes, and a change of angle to round the stumps from both bowlers. What was constant was Gilchrist's severity on anything erring in length. He reached 26 in the first two overs and inevitably a bowling change followed.

Could the script have been any different from last year's start for the Kolkata Knight Riders?Brendon McCullum's intoxicating 158 had taken them to an enormous victory a year ago, but they were outplayed by an efficient Deccan Chargers outfit on a juicy pitch in Cape Town. It has been a weekend to savour for bowlers, and each member of Deccan's attack did their bit to leave Kolkata scrambling to reach triple-digits. Herschelle Gibbs, coming off a triumphant series against Australia, and Rohit Sharma, back in the country where he made his name in 2007, then made sure Deccan's campaign didn't begin in the dismal way last season's had.

Kolkata had packed their batting with foreign players, but it wasn't enough to prevent a hapless batting performance. Their formidable top order was handcuffed by Deccan's new-ball bowlers. Fidel Edwards was fast and frugal - consistently around the 140kph mark, he gave away only six runs, the lowest conceded in a completed IPL spell - and RP Singh evicted the Kolkata openers early.

Everything went right for Deccan. With Kolkata on 2 for 1 after three overs, Gayle broke free with a crash past point for four and a mow over midwicket for six. Then Adam Gilchrist pushed a fielder back to long-on, where Gayle promptly holed out next ball.

In the first match of the IPL in 2008, Brendon McCullum smashed an unbeaten 158 from just 73 balls to set up a crushing win for his side. A year later, as season two got underway across the Indian Ocean in different conditions and under grey skies, Sachin Tendulkar batted 20 overs for an unbeaten 59 from 49 balls. It was as valuable as McCullum's blitzkrieg, if utterly different in execution and appeal, for it came on a track not entirely conducive to batting and laid the platform for Mumbai Indians' victory.

Stumbling and bumbling, Mumbai managed to put together a competitive total after the core of their vaunted batting struggled to cope with the uneven bounce at Newlands. There were few fireworks from the big bats and the team owed plenty to the vast experience of Tendulkar, who absorbed the pressure superbly. Where Chennai's pacers were tidy in restricting runs during the middle stages of Mumbai's innings, it was the spinners Harbhajan Singh and Sanath Jayasuriya who derailed Chennai. They varied their pace and reined in the big hitters before Lasith Malinga kept the tail under control.

Shilpa Shetty, the co owner of the defending champions Rajasthan Royals expressed that she is not only hoping that her team Rajasthan Royals take home the trophy again in the second edition of DLF IPL. But she was also keen to learn about the short format of the game from none other than the side’s coach and captain, Shane Warne.

"It`s a totally new ball game," says Shetty, co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals and a bollywood star. "I don`t know the nitty gritty and statistics. So I just look to Manoj Badale (her co-owner of the team) to answer those queries.”

”I have huge respect for Shane Warne, he brings so much energy to the team " Shetty added.

Cape Town: The streets of South Africa's carnival city will be flooded with bollywood stars in a different off-screen guise joining the well-known Cape Minstrel groups on Thursday as the DLF Indian Premier League launches itself
DLF Indian Premier League will hold a news conference on Thursday, where the Commissioner and Chairman of DLF IPL Chairman, Lalit Modi will be joined by Bollywood stars to announce, a major carnival through the streets of central Cape Town.

The parade will feature floats - one for each team and the DLF IPL itself - and various teams of Cape Town Minstrels, players and other celebrities will be on the floats.

As they parade through the streets of Cape Town, the Bollywood stars will get a taste of the uniquely Capetonian art form practiced by the Cape Minstrels, colourful groups who for more than a century have been traditionally competing on New Year's eve by marching through the streets showing the skills that they practice all year long.
